Why does everyone think that Sony's Network Products and Services is limited to just the PlayStation division?

Hey Clinton, as pointed out in a previous post of mine the reason for the the length in title updates aka patches are due to the strict size limitation Microsoft places on developers. There is a 4mb max size over a games lifespan according to a past Gamasutra article. So of course these patches will run amazingly fast compared to a 600mb patch for SOCOM.

I do agree, there needs to be an automatic silent patch feature, or background patch download for Sony's games since there are no size limitations on their network.

I don't view Facebook, Twitter, or other browser apps as an Xbox Live service. I view them as fixes for a system (the only system) that doesn't have a web browser. In my opinion, NXE already has navigation issues and adding Twitter and FB can only make it worse if not implemented correctly. Though I can say it is great marketing that they have to make it seem as if these things can only exist, or are only available on their console.

As far as background downloading your statement is false. To make sure I was certain I initiated two downloads from PSN and proceeded to play a game. While playing a mission in inFamous I received notification that my download was complete. Though I did find one interesting thing I never paid attention to; for demos you receive notification in-game, for videos you receive notification of completed download once you exit a game.

I think many people should actually use a service or product extensively before they begin to dispel incorrect information about said service or product. (This is a comment made in general about various things I read online.)

Remember how Gears 2 network issues were swept under the rug by various media outlets after they recently complained about a PSN title having network issues and how PSN is horrible and Live is worth the fee?

I am not claiming bias but I just want to point out that Live has issues like any other service but you don't see a consorted effort to bitch about each games network problems unless the entire Live network itself goes down...

I am just casually reading through your list and it is apparent to me that you either have never used any of the PSN services or played a game, or you have tried once back in 06 and haven't done it since. You must also be in Europe since you note the importance of Live Messenger. So just a few key things I see:

Indie Games: PSN has a lot of indie games. They are known for working with indie developers. Maybe you mean a much broader sense of the word indie as in you yourself using XNA to publish your own game.

Background downloading: This is why I state what I did. PSN background downloads content, you can even choose to stream any video you are downloading.

Streaming Video: I didn't know Netflix was that important of a bench mark being that you have to pay two service providers to use it. In select Euro territories you have VidZone for music video streaming. You have the PVR, granted you have to pay for the device but you can record and watch live TV and use Remote Play to view said content on the go. You can use the built in web browser to stream and download lots of video online. I would point out Hulu but seeing the recent troubles you are unable to do so. If you like Netflix so much, then you can purchase PlayOn that allows you to stream Netflix, Hulu content. YouTube has a TV channel that is formatted for the PS3. With the user submitted video, TV shows, Movies, and other content they are adding it is even more a feather in the hat at the various services you can access with your PS3.

Patches: Just a quick note about patches. This is certainly nice to have but the reason you are to do it quickly on the 360 is due to the size limit placed on title updates by Microsoft. 4mb is the most they will allow developers so they will have to be careful about what they patch. If the console came with a standard harddrive then maybe it wouldn't be an issue. Though I understand that getting a 600mb patch for a game isn't the best thing in the world especially if you can't download said patch in the background or have it silently patched ala Steam.

This is getting rather long and my lunch time is running out so I will just leave it at that.

  •  One of the many things I have always pondered was kickback for playing games. Now we have trophies and gamer points but I much prefer games where you unlock concept art, developer videos, etc. There has always been one other thing that bothered me, Demos.
