I think that the Killzone 2 and the PS3 PR team must be one and the same, think about it, over promising and under delivering.

Regardless, I also think that people have lost sight of what a 7/10 represents. Its a pretty good score, if after 3-4 years work on an undergraduate degree you work would average 70% you would be walking away with a first, hardly a result to be disappointed with. I've played more than a few of Edge's 7/10 and from what I can remember most of them have been well worth while.

I do understand some PS3 owners getting upset by this score, it’s a natural side effect of hype that the producers and press generate about games.

Let's be clear about the hype first, it was pretty enormous, I for one will never forget that first trailer, people have been waiting years for this game and many will have shelled out on a PS3 in anticipation of its release. Failing that, it may well have been a major factor (if not the deciding factor) in many more owners’ decision to purchase the platform. The marketing men involved have all done a great job of cajoling the public into wanting this game and it is probably fair to say that expectations were sky high (maybe orbital) for this title.

To then be told that the game is may not live up to your expectations is at best a little disappointing. If however you have been planning your life around a game’s release, as I suspect more than a few fans have been, then this same score could be crushing news resulting in prepubescent-esque rants on the Internet.

What I would say to those who are currently venting their hatred at Edge is simply this, Edge’s score is only an opinion. I'm sure the editor of Edge doesn't care if you go out and buy a game even if they recommend you save your money and vice versa. It is in fact this very reason that makes Edge worth reading in the first place, it is unadulterated opinion, they are prepared to speak their minds even if everyone else disagrees, they don't care what you think so you shouldn't care what they think? It is just information for you to process a you choose…

So then I suppose you could consider this kind of reaction not Edge's fault but the natural result of a game that has been over hyped so much so that it can only lead to disappointment. If producers want to avoid this kind of furore in future maybe they should then consider carefully how they promote games because asking Edge to keep their gobs shut and just go along with the rest of the sheep is missing the point completely.

Personally I think that 40% uptake is a superb result for Nintendo (even if this is an underestimate). Regardless of the potential "health" benefits, I would be interested to see how many of the 40% had played any computer games before. I understand that it may well be gimmicky for those who well versed in gaming but this might just be what people who never played games before were waiting for. Even if only half of that 40% is people who are completely new to gaming then they have increased their client base by a potential 20%. For a business as large as Nintendo that is a very large number and it seems that Microsoft still have a lot of catching up to do in this respect.

I would fully expect the Gaming Industry to avoid recession even if other sectors of the country (and global economy) are heading this way. In previous recessions Joe Public has always continued its spending pattern on entertainment un hindered. My only worry for the industry would be that even more people may be tempted to buy pre-owned games meaning that less cash is flowing back to developers.

For me Sierra has become a bit like the old family dog. What I mean to say is that there are plenty of happy memories from more youthful days but that was a long time ago. All it seems to do now is sleep by the radiatior and has started to smell. When things become this lifeless it's time to call the vet that one last time...
